Why this topic?

Gun violence is a monumental issue in America, with Forbes reporting 464 mass shootings in 2022 as of September 5th. While the topic of gun control is tossed around aimlessly within our government, this issue seeps further into the lives of American students. The Washington Post reports that over 320,000 students have experienced gun violence in their own schools. This fact is absolutely unacceptable and proves that change is urgently needed.

The primary goal of my research project is to identify the discrepancies and similarities between elementary school-safety strategies in the metropolitan region of Colorado. I’ll be aiming to record the different protocols used in active-shooter response in order to make a conclusion regarding the consistency of Colorado schools’ safety programs. The results of this research project will be integral in determining what improvement, if need be, can be made to better protect students.
